Busted!

When I initially started this post, it had been a week and 2 days since our family experienced its 1st case of a broken bone.  Due to life going on as usual, now it’s been 3 weeks and a day and unfortunately, the broken bone was experienced by the littlest one of the bunch, A.  That’s right, my 5yr-old has had to deal with a broken finger. Friday, June 27, close to 5pm, K claims that she wanted to change her clothes.  Usually, the kids stay in their pajamas all day if we’re not going anywhere.  I guess K was feeling a little funky, so out of nowhere, she decided to change her clothes.  I did not know that the other kids, including D our son, were still playing around, jumping and clowning in the bedroom.  My big girl wanted privacy.  No one called down to me on the 2nd floor to get the other kids out of the way.  No one suggested she go into the bathroom or my bedroom for privacy or tell D to get out.  No one respected anyone enough to realize it was time to stop playing.  Instead, K slammed her room door shut, and I guess as A was walking out, her left hand was close enough to the back of the door hinge where it closes that her ring finger crunched in it.  B even said she heard a crunch sound. Enter pulsating screams.  I was on my laptop when A shouted, “Look at my finger, K!”  She ran downstairs with eyes bigger than her little body shouting, “Look at my finger, mommy!”...

I Was There: Natural “Thangs” Expo

In the first of my “I Was There” series, I’m finally posting details about the 1st hair event I attended.  It was the Natural “Thangs” Expo @ the Highlightz Event Center located at 454 Cambridge St., Fredericksburg, VA.  I found out about it through someone else’s FB page-my neighbor with natural hair.  Someone tagged her and suggested the event to her, but she didn’t go.  Well, I pondered and pondered and became brave enough to go by myself Saturday, April 19.  It was hosted by Santasha Quarles, a YouTuber with the name, Santasha’s Styles and by Locks4ever, a salon specializing in SisterLocks by Charlotte Van Horn.  She also served as the comedy relief and she was funnnnnnyyyyy.  Both ladies were very friendly and down-to-earth.  This wasn’t your typical fancy, smancy, foo foo type event with celebrities and big name sponsors, but it was nice.  The band did a fantastic job covering old school and current songs. The center is located in a part of downtown I don’t usually go to, so I did have to stop and ask if I was going in the right direction at a gas station because as with most of the streets in the area, one street turns into another street.  So, when the names change, there’s no warning, and it certainly wasn’t reflected in the MapQuest directions, so I kept asking myself, “is this right?” in a nervous chatter.  The building it was in was decent.  What’s interesting about it was the fact that the center has a really nice pic of itself on its Facebook page, yet when I get there, one...

SheaMoisture BOGO Haul

Well, I actually participated in BOGO sales on time.  That is so rare for me.  I am so proud of myself not missing them and of the SheaMoisture products I was blessed to get at Walgreens, then at CVS the week after.  Wal-Mart and Target better get on the ball and have some BOGO sales.  Their little $2.00 off here or 20% off there did not persuade me to light a shopping fire in their aisles.  As I’ve said before, I’m not a big fan of the way the other stores price this line of products, even with a bargain card.  CVS had most of their stuff marked @11-14.00.  Gladly, though, I found most of Walgreens’ stuff @9.99 and up.  I believe I did very well within budget because deep down inside…I would’ve bought it all.  This is my kind of candy. So, here’s what I bought from Walgreens to try in May:  2 Yucca & Baobab Anti-Breakage Masques, Y&B Thickening Growth Milk, and Raw Shea Butter Moisture Retention Shampoo.  The Y&B line smells soooo nice.  I had no idea it was so sweet and pleasant smelling.  I went back there twice to see if they had anymore Coconut & Hibiscus Curl Enhancing Smoothie and Curling Gel Soufflé, but they ran out each time. Then, miraculously, another BOGO sale started near payday at CVS at the start of June.  Naturally, the hubby looked at me as if I’d become addicted and said that I already has some.  Well, I convinced him that I should take advantage of this sale because the other store didn’t have everything I wanted.  He...

How to Survive in This Mascara Era!

Hello, sassy people! Smiley‘s Big and Beautiful Lil Sis is finally making her debut. I pitched the brilliant idea of posting beauty articles on my sister’s blog months ago, and here I am. Fashionably late I might add but duh, this is a beauty blog, and anything with the word ‘fashion’ in it is always given a pass. ~~Smiley Says:  Enjoy this Beauty Minute with Saslaya aka Crystal Suitt, my sister.  This will give a different perspective on products that I may or may not have tried before.  And sometimes, I may not have time to.  So, anytime you see her handle, you’ll know it’s her.~~ MASCARA-I love it! You Love it, Drag Queens even love it. The one thing we do not love is buying a shiny new tube of liquid beatification only to find out it sucks! We all have the same expectations. Mascara should not need more than 2 coats, we better not see any clumps, and the label has to be true to claim. In other words, if it says it is waterproof, lengthens or volumizes and nowadays, even grows lashes, we demand our money’s worth. BTW, I truly believe in the power of the word WATERPROOF. I don’t care if you don’t have intentions of crying.  Always wear waterproof formulas if you can. You never know when that gust of wind can trigger an allergy attack leaving you all watery eyed and running everywhere. Not sexy. Primers. If you don’t know what primers are for lashes, it’s applied to them first, and its intention is to hold your mascara in place to prevent smudging and flaking. I don’t have a need for this. My advice is...

SheaMoisture-BOGO Sale @ Walgreens!

SheaMoisture Alert!  SheaMoisture Alert!  Products at Walgreens on sale for “Buy One, Get One Free” from now till May 31, 2014!  The entire line is available at that deal with a participating Walgreens savings card-Organic Bath & Body, Baby Care, Men, Hair and Skin Care, 4-16oz. items.  Trust me when I say that I do not care for the prices at Walgreens with or without a savings card.  Currently, most of the SM products there are being sold at $10.49 or more, depending on the store.  However, given the fact that I can’t live without the shampoo or curl enhancing smoothie, and I’d like to try the gel souffle and the anti-breakage masque, adding another dollar or so along with a free item is not bad at all.  Who doesn’t like FREE?!!  It’s absolutely worth it.  I’ve surprisingly saved there before.  When I took my mom back to NC in April, I wanted to see what products were around that we may not have near my neighborhood.  In the clearance section was ORS Curls Unleashed “No Restrictions” Moisturizing Conditioner for $3.49.  Retail price:  $14.99.  OW!  Annnndddd…faint.  Only two were left.  I used my sister’s card, she bought one, I bought the other.  I was only going to settle for one, but she was nice enough to get the other because as she put it, “You have too many heads.  You will need both.”  So true, so true.  Now, I know I can’t always pass this store by because there may be a treat hidden in clearance.  The SM products at Wal-Mart and Target usually sell for $9.99.  According to Sunday’s ads, Target‘s...

February Favorites 2014

February was truly a cold month.  We were still under snow and still dealing with extremely dry skin.  This ‘favorites’ list has taken so long to get up here due to life and maybe, just maybe, my lists are too long.  Perhaps narrowing them down to seasons next year instead of on a monthly basis would work better for me.  So far, I’ve only done a list for January and I can’t believe the hassle I went through for that month.  Well, here’s what we really liked during month #2 which helped us survive our harsh winter: Garnier Skin Renew Miracle Skin Perfector Combination to Oily Skin in Deep BB Cream w/Broad Spectrum SPF 20-ummm, mouthful!  “It mattifies, minimizes pores, and conceals imperfections to give skin a naturally smooth, flawless finish…sunscreen, Dermatologist tested, combines oil-absorbing mineral perlite, natural tint and a touch of hydration.”-www.garnierusa.com.  I was very surprised to see this in Deep at our new Wal-Mart because it doesn’t really cater to women of color.  Given how light it is, someone might say that it still doesn’t offer a deep enough shade, but it works nicely giving me light to medium coverage all over my face.  Bonus:  it was on clearance for $5 something compared to $11.99.  Very runny though, and dries fast before I can set it.  Unfortunately, I’m not sure if I’m convinced of any BB creams’ superpowers anyway because they just seem to be tinted sunscreens.  These days, I guess that’s beneficial, but I’m not reapplying like most sunscreens and this product suggests.  Weird.  Also for me, I still had to use a primer and...

Going Out and OOTN

One February night was my adult time out of the house.  I had a rare girls’ night out.  It’s starting to look pretty regular if things continue down the friendly path.  I went to a dinner this time for my neighbor/friend, Su, and I thought I’d share what I did to get ready.  She reserved a table for 9 of us crazy ladies who could make it at Bonefish Grill.  That restaurant is usually reserved for my date night.  Seafood, here I come!  I ordered Ahi Tuna “Tokyo Style” with Fresh Blackberry Smash Iced Tea.  Yes, I used chopsticks.  I drank a bit of Cookies white wine at Su’s house before we left, so I didn’t want more while there.  Plus, it was a late dinner-reserved for 8:30-I only had a banana with the wine, so there was no need to get wasted due to lack of nourishment.  That.  Is.  Not.  Cute.  The food didn’t get to us till 10 mins to 10pm.  I also wore a few of the pieces hubby gifted me recently and put my week-old twistout into a frohawk.  I was able to give her that VS Midnight Dare lotion mentioned in Jan. Faves and a travel coffee tumbler about teachers since she started as a substitute this school year.  I even threw in some Hershey’s Kisses.  It was February, after all. Face, Hair: Can’t ever leave the house w/o some type of sensitive skin moisturizer w/SPF, lip balm and SPANX on first, then Dermarest Psoriasis Medicated Moisturizer on areas affected by seborrheic dermatitis; Black n’ Sassy Creamy Set setting cream, water to smooth edges...

NYX is @ Belk!

/niks/noun-(Greek Mythology) goddess of the night. NYX Cosmetics is now at Belk.  Well, at least the one closest to me in Spotsylvania Mall in Fredericksburg, VA, across from the Central Park shopping area.  Every time I looked up the company, the webs say it’s supposed to be at Target.  It’s not at the Target closest to me.  I doubt we’ll ever get it there.  However, you can order it online from Target.  You can’t, oddly, order it from Belk’s website.  When I search for it, this pops up:  “Oops.  No results were found.”  Does that mean it’s exclusively at our local Belk?  This particular one was remodeled recently, and my mom and I were originally there to look for the Fashion Fair counter because I bought my foundation stick from there some time ago.  She had a gift card she planned to use for some pressed powder.  Well, they got rid of Fashion Fair, but brought in NYX…interesting.  I was still excited to finally see this inexpensive, colorful brand in person, but it was situated a bit weirdly among  known high-end brands like Estee Lauder, Clinique, and one I’ve never heard of called Pink Holiday.  Who knows, I’m probably late to the game on that one.  I’m probably late on Gorgeous Cosmetics as well.  I didn’t see if their counter was there because after we bought a few items from NYX, we left.  However, I did spot a product guide and a beauty book of the brand created by Australian makeup artist, David McConnell, at the register.  Prices online seem to be mid to high-end.  Check them out at...

Mothers at War With Themselves

I have to admit that seeing that black Honda Odyssey in the water after being driven by a mom who claims to have seen demons and planned to kill herself and her children in the minivan earlier this month, was a bit eerie.  That’s the family vehicle I drive around in the same color.  The mom, Ebony Wilkerson, has 3 kids with one on the way.  I have 4 kids.  Her oldest is 10.  So is mine.  Her second oldest is 9.  My second oldest will be 9 this summer.  She may have actually experienced demonic occurrences in her home.  Thankfully, I don’t.  She may have been running away from an abusive husband.  Thankfully, I don’t have that problem either.  Whatever the case, those children should not have been in her care.  Her sister came to the scene in Daytona Beach to comfort the kids, but was she around before this incident?  Were there signs of trouble ahead of time?  I know there’s only so much family members can do to help mentally ill or just depressed loved ones.  However, were the signs there early enough for someone to at least be there for the children so they wouldn’t have to experience something like this? Mothers play a vital role in any child’s life.  We are the ‘before,’ ‘during,’ and ‘after’ for them.  The sun, the moon, and the stars.  We are the very nature that rocks their world, and if we are damaged in any way, something or someone needs to be there as backup.  If there’s no one there to take care of us after we’ve taken...
