I Was There: Yolanda Renee Takes The DMV

I made it to my second hair event:  “Yolanda Renee Takes Your City Tour-Yolanda Renee Takes The DMV.”  Before that, she was in New York and made sure to do something for her area this time.  I found out about the tour from her YouTube channel and checked out her blog to see if any of the cities would be near me.  I was going to push myself into getting over the fear of making it to more events so I could continue to be inspired to blog.  Side note:  For those who may not know, the DMV I’m talking about doesn’t handle driver’s licenses and vanity plates.  DMV stands for DC, Maryland, and Virginia.  Might as well be one giant state altogether, right?  Hubby drove because in usual fashion, I would have been too nervous to drive in that area.  He did not mind, though, because he took D to see the new Disney’s “Planes” sequel, “Planes:  Fire & Rescue,” for father/son time while the event went on. Saturday, July 26, the Maryland native had her Meet ‘n Greet at Bar 7, a sassy little “all black errryyyttthhang” nightspot with a bar, lounge area, stage and DJ booth located on 7th Street.  I invited my cousin, Pinky, to go with me, so she and my mom arranged to come from NC the night before.  My mom got to spend some girly time with my daughters.  The 6-9pm event was $40 + tax for VIP if you didn’t pay in time for the early bird special at lower rate.  To make sure I didn’t mess up our regular budget,...

Busted!

When I initially started this post, it had been a week and 2 days since our family experienced its 1st case of a broken bone.  Due to life going on as usual, now it’s been 3 weeks and a day and unfortunately, the broken bone was experienced by the littlest one of the bunch, A.  That’s right, my 5yr-old has had to deal with a broken finger. Friday, June 27, close to 5pm, K claims that she wanted to change her clothes.  Usually, the kids stay in their pajamas all day if we’re not going anywhere.  I guess K was feeling a little funky, so out of nowhere, she decided to change her clothes.  I did not know that the other kids, including D our son, were still playing around, jumping and clowning in the bedroom.  My big girl wanted privacy.  No one called down to me on the 2nd floor to get the other kids out of the way.  No one suggested she go into the bathroom or my bedroom for privacy or tell D to get out.  No one respected anyone enough to realize it was time to stop playing.  Instead, K slammed her room door shut, and I guess as A was walking out, her left hand was close enough to the back of the door hinge where it closes that her ring finger crunched in it.  B even said she heard a crunch sound. Enter pulsating screams.  I was on my laptop when A shouted, “Look at my finger, K!”  She ran downstairs with eyes bigger than her little body shouting, “Look at my finger, mommy!”...

I Was There: Natural “Thangs” Expo

In the first of my “I Was There” series, I’m finally posting details about the 1st hair event I attended.  It was the Natural “Thangs” Expo @ the Highlightz Event Center located at 454 Cambridge St., Fredericksburg, VA.  I found out about it through someone else’s FB page-my neighbor with natural hair.  Someone tagged her and suggested the event to her, but she didn’t go.  Well, I pondered and pondered and became brave enough to go by myself Saturday, April 19.  It was hosted by Santasha Quarles, a YouTuber with the name, Santasha’s Styles and by Locks4ever, a salon specializing in SisterLocks by Charlotte Van Horn.  She also served as the comedy relief and she was funnnnnnyyyyy.  Both ladies were very friendly and down-to-earth.  This wasn’t your typical fancy, smancy, foo foo type event with celebrities and big name sponsors, but it was nice.  The band did a fantastic job covering old school and current songs. The center is located in a part of downtown I don’t usually go to, so I did have to stop and ask if I was going in the right direction at a gas station because as with most of the streets in the area, one street turns into another street.  So, when the names change, there’s no warning, and it certainly wasn’t reflected in the MapQuest directions, so I kept asking myself, “is this right?” in a nervous chatter.  The building it was in was decent.  What’s interesting about it was the fact that the center has a really nice pic of itself on its Facebook page, yet when I get there, one...

Going Out and OOTN

One February night was my adult time out of the house.  I had a rare girls’ night out.  It’s starting to look pretty regular if things continue down the friendly path.  I went to a dinner this time for my neighbor/friend, Su, and I thought I’d share what I did to get ready.  She reserved a table for 9 of us crazy ladies who could make it at Bonefish Grill.  That restaurant is usually reserved for my date night.  Seafood, here I come!  I ordered Ahi Tuna “Tokyo Style” with Fresh Blackberry Smash Iced Tea.  Yes, I used chopsticks.  I drank a bit of Cookies white wine at Su’s house before we left, so I didn’t want more while there.  Plus, it was a late dinner-reserved for 8:30-I only had a banana with the wine, so there was no need to get wasted due to lack of nourishment.  That.  Is.  Not.  Cute.  The food didn’t get to us till 10 mins to 10pm.  I also wore a few of the pieces hubby gifted me recently and put my week-old twistout into a frohawk.  I was able to give her that VS Midnight Dare lotion mentioned in Jan. Faves and a travel coffee tumbler about teachers since she started as a substitute this school year.  I even threw in some Hershey’s Kisses.  It was February, after all. Face, Hair: Can’t ever leave the house w/o some type of sensitive skin moisturizer w/SPF, lip balm and SPANX on first, then Dermarest Psoriasis Medicated Moisturizer on areas affected by seborrheic dermatitis; Black n’ Sassy Creamy Set setting cream, water to smooth edges...

January Favorites 2014

February 9 was my youngest little one’s 5th birthday. Her favorite things right now are anything Dora and Hello Kitty. So, when she said she’d like to have a backpack for school, which begins in September, we went to the store with getting a Dora one in mind. Poor Dora, there weren’t anymore, but there were Hello Kitty and Minnie Mouse ones. I told her we could go to another store to look for a Dora one. No, no, no. Hello Kitty. And it had to be the one with zebra prints on it. Major style from a 5 year old! So, I have the idea to post favorites for every month about good deals or products that I found to be helpful and maybe you will too. This is not to brag at all. I like sharing things that I’ve discovered because you never know if someone else has never tried it. By the way, I didn’t mean to be so late in February posting this, but as I was editing, I found out that another one of my mom’s sisters is in the hospital, this time with stage 4 colon cancer. When it rains, it pours. On with the January faves: The Healing Garden ORGANICS Fig & Lavender Body Lotion and Body Mist:  They have a very refreshing and invigorating scent of two things I never would have put together on my own.  The lotion is 85% certified organic and the mist is 72%.  No artificial colors, not tested on animals and dermatologist-tested.  I don’t know when exactly these came out, but I received them as a...
