I Was There: Yolanda Renee Takes The DMV

I made it to my second hair event:  “Yolanda Renee Takes Your City Tour-Yolanda Renee Takes The DMV.”  Before that, she was in New York and made sure to do something for her area this time.  I found out about the tour from her YouTube channel and checked out her blog to see if any of the cities would be near me.  I was going to push myself into getting over the fear of making it to more events so I could continue to be inspired to blog.  Side note:  For those who may not know, the DMV I’m talking about doesn’t handle driver’s licenses and vanity plates.  DMV stands for DC, Maryland, and Virginia.  Might as well be one giant state altogether, right?  Hubby drove because in usual fashion, I would have been too nervous to drive in that area.  He did not mind, though, because he took D to see the new Disney’s “Planes” sequel, “Planes:  Fire & Rescue,” for father/son time while the event went on. Saturday, July 26, the Maryland native had her Meet ‘n Greet at Bar 7, a sassy little “all black errryyyttthhang” nightspot with a bar, lounge area, stage and DJ booth located on 7th Street.  I invited my cousin, Pinky, to go with me, so she and my mom arranged to come from NC the night before.  My mom got to spend some girly time with my daughters.  The 6-9pm event was $40 + tax for VIP if you didn’t pay in time for the early bird special at lower rate.  To make sure I didn’t mess up our regular budget,...

I Was There: Natural “Thangs” Expo

In the first of my “I Was There” series, I’m finally posting details about the 1st hair event I attended.  It was the Natural “Thangs” Expo @ the Highlightz Event Center located at 454 Cambridge St., Fredericksburg, VA.  I found out about it through someone else’s FB page-my neighbor with natural hair.  Someone tagged her and suggested the event to her, but she didn’t go.  Well, I pondered and pondered and became brave enough to go by myself Saturday, April 19.  It was hosted by Santasha Quarles, a YouTuber with the name, Santasha’s Styles and by Locks4ever, a salon specializing in SisterLocks by Charlotte Van Horn.  She also served as the comedy relief and she was funnnnnnyyyyy.  Both ladies were very friendly and down-to-earth.  This wasn’t your typical fancy, smancy, foo foo type event with celebrities and big name sponsors, but it was nice.  The band did a fantastic job covering old school and current songs. The center is located in a part of downtown I don’t usually go to, so I did have to stop and ask if I was going in the right direction at a gas station because as with most of the streets in the area, one street turns into another street.  So, when the names change, there’s no warning, and it certainly wasn’t reflected in the MapQuest directions, so I kept asking myself, “is this right?” in a nervous chatter.  The building it was in was decent.  What’s interesting about it was the fact that the center has a really nice pic of itself on its Facebook page, yet when I get there, one...

January Favorites 2014

February 9 was my youngest little one’s 5th birthday. Her favorite things right now are anything Dora and Hello Kitty. So, when she said she’d like to have a backpack for school, which begins in September, we went to the store with getting a Dora one in mind. Poor Dora, there weren’t anymore, but there were Hello Kitty and Minnie Mouse ones. I told her we could go to another store to look for a Dora one. No, no, no. Hello Kitty. And it had to be the one with zebra prints on it. Major style from a 5 year old! So, I have the idea to post favorites for every month about good deals or products that I found to be helpful and maybe you will too. This is not to brag at all. I like sharing things that I’ve discovered because you never know if someone else has never tried it. By the way, I didn’t mean to be so late in February posting this, but as I was editing, I found out that another one of my mom’s sisters is in the hospital, this time with stage 4 colon cancer. When it rains, it pours. On with the January faves: The Healing Garden ORGANICS Fig & Lavender Body Lotion and Body Mist:  They have a very refreshing and invigorating scent of two things I never would have put together on my own.  The lotion is 85% certified organic and the mist is 72%.  No artificial colors, not tested on animals and dermatologist-tested.  I don’t know when exactly these came out, but I received them as a...

Love, Love, Love

I didn’t grow up big on holidays because even now, I believe the focus should be on Christ, but I have to admit, it sure feels nice when you get recognized for being you during the holidays or any day for that matter.  You, as a person, should never be forgotten by those you love, whether it’s with a phone call, email, letter, or gift.  When you have a significant other who does things for you ‘just because,’ that makes the moment even more special, and you, the giftee, get your love tank filled.  So, my hubby decided to spoil us, the children and I, the day before Valentine’s Day because…that’s how we do-early: Cards/Candy, The latest edition of the MAC Viva Glam family-MAC Viva Glam Rihanna, Gold Foil Black Top, Striped Surplice Blouse, Faux Fur Leopard Jacket from Ashley Stewart.             The frosty matte lipstick shows up kind of red with an orangey tint, is very moisturizing and retails for $16.00 at Macy’s, Amazon, and other select stores. It has Rihanna’s signature embossed in red in a lovely frosted red container, and all proceeds are donated to people living with HIV/AIDS.  I am not ashamed to say it is my first MAC product.  I never liked diving into the hype of certain name brands unless I know it has something worth it to me and not because all of the beauty bloggers or beauty gurus say so.  It has to be timeless, not just trendy.  I prefer my drugstore brands like CoverGirl, L’Oreal, Maybelline, Revlon, or Rimmel-stuff with coupons! However, I have found...

Beyonce Brings Back the Long and Life Goes On

Beyoncé, Beyoncé, Beyoncé.  She was spotted with her long extensions while boarding a plane in Brazil with her cootie, sugar boo boo, Blue Ivy a few days ago.  I have to give it to her.  Her pixie, then weaved bob, lasted longer than I expected.  I can’t tell from the pic if the extensions are braided from the scalp or glued on or whatever, but that’s definitely a long ponytail blowing in the wind.  I’m not even mad at the fact she’s walking up to the plane in just her socks.  That would be me all the way too-comfy.  Anyway, it’s amazing how she went really short, to bobbing it, then back to being her usual long hair throwing self, right?  Riiiigggghhhhtttt?  At least she tried something new for a change, and I don’t feel let down like I’m sure so many hardcore naturals or serious hair enthusiasts with some serious haterade, do.  http://www.usmagazine.com/celebrity-beauty/news/beyonce-steps-out-with-long-waist-length-hair-2013249 Here’s why:  It’s just hair.  She can do whatever she wants with it whenever the mood kicks in.  Granted, I was thrilled and shocked by the pixie cut because it was truly a dramatic and unexpected difference.  I had been thinking for awhile that  it was time for her to have another look, which could include darkening the color, shaving a side, cutting it to shoulder-length, something, anything a little more…2013.  Then, bam…pixie.  Not even a shot of how the actual hair looked after taking the weave out.  Interestingly, I still came away from the pic thinking, “Cool, she certainly has the face for it.”  Then, a swarm of assumptions hurled in.  People claimed it was a lace front wig cut that way.  Really? ...
